The first route "Green Mountain Line" of the Danhai tramway is opened. The line Kanding — Hongshulin is 7.3 km long and has 11 stations linking the residential neighborhoods and and offices in the north of the city to the metro station Hongshulin. The hours of operation are 6:30 AM to 10:00 PM every day on 15 minute invtervals.

The Blue line (Bannan) is extended 1.9 km. After the opening of the station Dingpu in the southwest, the length of the metro lines in Taipei reaches 131.1 km.

The Songshan line extension is opened between Ximen and Songshan stations.
The Xiaonanmen line is discontinued and replaced by the new Green line through service, all trains from Xindian continue to Songshan and direct service to Tamsui is discontinued.

A new line, the Xinyi line, opens from Chiang Kai-shek memorial to Xiangshan as a branch of the Tamsui line. There are 5 stations along a length of 6.4 km.
The Xiaonanmen branch line is extended to Taipower Building station.

First rapid transit line ever in Taiwan is opened, the Muzha line between Taipei Zoo and Zhongshan Junior High School stations. The line uses the VAL 256 system made by Matra.
