Sistema Automático de Transporte Urbano
Founded 2004

History
The Sistema Automático de Transporte Urbano (or just SATU) was a project to provide rapid transport between Paço do Arcos (station on the Cascais railway line) and Cacém (station on the Sintra railway line) with a branch towards São Marcos neighbourhood. The total length would have been almost 12km with 16 stations.

Construction of the system began in 2002 and the first phase finished in 2004. Operations between Navegantes (next to Paço do Arcos railway station) and Forum (adjacent to Oeiras Parque shopping center) began on 7th June 2004. The total length was only 1,15km with only three stations.

The second phase (from Forum to Lagos) was supposed to start operating in 2005, but was never built.

Due to Portuguese laws that prohibit municipal assets to operate at a loss for three consecutive years (Oeiras municipality owned 51%), in 2014 it was decided to close the system. The last day of operations was 31st May 2015.

In 2017, as part of mayors Isaltino Morais (who opened the system in 2004) re-election campaing, it was promised to reopen the system and even to expand (unknown if according to initial project, or a different one). But despite Morais winning the election, the system remains closed.

Even in 2024 the infrastructure of the system remains, but access to the stations is prohibited.

System data
Length: 1,15km (built) / 11,63km (planned)
Number of stations: 3 (built) / 16 (planned)
The system utilized a MiniMetro automated people mover system on an elevated track (unknown gauge). The rolling stock were two non-motorized cars that each had a capacity of 106 passengers. Cars were propelled by a cable system powered by an electric motor based at Navegantes Station, not unlike a cable car on a guided track. The line consisted of a single track which split into two at stations. SATU operated at four-minute intervals during peak times, but would also operate as an on-demand system at times of lowest ridership. During these times, riders would summon a SATU car by pressing a button at the station.
