History
First plans of a circular railway connection in Almada date back to 1930s. It resulted in a short-lived railway line called "Ramal do Seixal" (Seixal branch) which was demilished in 1970.

The first plans for the current system date back to 1985. Ten years later (1995) the initial project was approved and signed between the Portuguese government and all municipalities which were involved in the project - Almada, Seixal, Barreiro and Moita. Ironically all needed documents were signed in the Barreiro town hall, to which by 2024 the network has not yet extended.

The project of 1995 had the currently existing 3 branches - Cacilhas (but with two different routes, only one was constructed), Pragal/Universidade and Corroios. Only the first phase of this project was built in 2007. The not finished projects include extension of the Universidade branch towards Costa da Caparica and Trafaria, as well as the Corroios branch extension towards Amora and Foguteiro. An additional, fourth, route was planned to connect Amora, Seixal, Barreiro and Moita. The extension project has once again resurfaced in 2024 with a possible extenston towards Costa da Caparica (to the west), but also a new proposal for expansion towards east. First eastwards expansion phase would start at Corroios and go through the central area of Seixal, central area of Barreiro and finish at Alhos Vedros. This phase could be either LRT or BRT. Second phase (BRT only) would start at Alhos Vedros and go through central area of Moita and further towards Montijo and Alochete.

See a map of the original project (from 1995) and proposal from 2024 here.

System data
Length: 13,5km
Number of lines: 3
Track gauge: 1435mm
Electrification: 750 V DC overhead wire

The system extends into the neighbouring Seixal municipality between Santa Amaro and Corroios (1,4km with additional 1,3km of service track). Also the depot of the system is located within Seixal municipality.

Projects and constructions
From time to time over the years since the system was inaugurated, the building of the line towards Seixal, Barreiro and Moita is brought up, but mainly as political campaigns, without any real work done.

www.carrismetropolitana.pt

Carris Metropolitana provides bus services on city and inter-municipal routes in Almada with electric and regular buses (no special electric bus routes).

In Almada Transportes Sul do Tejo (based in Almada) operates under the Carris Metropolitana brand.

Routes in Almada municipality are 30xx, 31xx, 35xx, 36xx, 37xx, 46xx and 47xx.

Carris Metropolitana route numbers always have 4 digits which help identify the type of route. First digit always indicates area (Almada is in area 3). Second digit inicates the type: city route (0-4, usually indicting one of the major cities in the area), inter-municipality route within same area (5) inter-municipality route to different area (6), routes to Lisbon (7-8), routes that go outside the Lisbon metropolitan area (9). Last two digits are simply the route number.
