This is an interesting photo for several reasons. The photo shows the then new tram terminus of route 2. In December 1972, P.C.C.'s came into service here and route 2 was renamed 21; the diverging track serves for line 20, which would be withdrawn in December 1973.

The new temporary railway bridge had just been put into service, taking the old railway crossing out of service. At the same time, works were started to move the tram route to the middle of the roadway, where it still lies today.

The old railway crossing was only used by trams for service reasons or for the daily school run. Here, it is not clear whether this is an enthusiasts' tour or the school trip in question: the tram's designation does not indicate a normal scheduled service, but there is also a possibility that this was done intentionally, since the vehicle would be heading for the depot on the way back anyway.

The old railway crossing in Gentbrugge

Brusselsesteenweg

A special postcard from my collection. It shows the crossing between the tram and the railway line in Gentbrugge. This situation existed until 1970. On both sides of the crossing a tram service terminated: on the photo you see a tram of line 2 and on the other side passengers could continue with line 20. The trams only used the crossing for service reasons, except for a single school tram.
